2025 Reforestation Tools Workshop

2025 Reforestation Tools Workshop

“Increasing publicly available tools for climate-smart seed sourcing and forest restoration"

The goals of this workshop are to showcase the Climate Adapted Seed Tool (CAST) currently available on https://reforestationtools.org/ and new resources being developed through the CA/UCOP-funded collaborative project and to give those involved in reforestation a chance to try these tools, ask questions, and provide feedback to the research team.

Attendance is free. Breakfast snacks and lunch will be provided for those who register to attend in person.

For those attending in person, a laptop will be needed if you wish to try out the tools for yourself. Please indicate on the registration form if you do not have one to bring, and we will attempt to find sufficient “loaner” laptops.

The finalized tools/resources will all be freely available on reforestationtools.org. We welcome your help in making them as useful for reforestation professionals as possible!

CAST Tool

Agenda

9-10: Participant and team introductions and overview of project and tools.

10-11: CAST, a tool for identifying tree seed sources likely to perform well under future climate. Tool will be introduced and preliminary data on seedling performance from real world tests shown. Updates for selecting diversified portfolios will be presented. This will be followed by an opportunity to try the tool and provide feedback.

11-11:45: Seed collection prioritization maps.

Before reforestation activities can take place, nurseries must have a good supply of appropriate seeds. These maps aim to identify where tree populations are at risk, which areas are under-represented in seed bank collections, and where these overlap. Participants will be invited to explore the maps and provide feedback.

11:45-12:45 Lunch break.

12:45-1:30: The MASTIF model and predicting seed production.

Timing seed collections can be challenging because of the year-to-year variability in tree seed production. We have fit a seed production model to available data for California species and used it to create an interactive tool showing estimated past seed production (based on past climate data) and 1-2 year future seed production (based on user-selected hypotheticals). We welcome feedback on what features would make this tool most usable for seed collection teams.

1:30-2:30: Discussion and free exploration time of other reforestation tools. The latter includes Postfire Conifer Reforestation Planning Tool (PostCRPT), which estimates the priority of natural regeneration, and Postfire Restoration Success Estimation Tool (PReSET), which estimates where tree planting is most likely to be effective.
